SOC 462 Applied Social Change [CRN 76738]
Overview of Course
This interdisciplinary service-learning course is designed for the Chapman Impact Program students. It is designed to provide students with an understanding of our ever-changing society's social relationships and interactions and geography's role in these interactions. Looking at globalization through a broad lens, we will examine social change issues such as migration, social inequality, health care systems and health outcomes, gender equity, activism movements, urban development, and environmental issues, among other topics. As we travel, we will witness first-hand how social change occurs across regions. Through in-class activities, students will not only gain knowledge but also develop practical skills in observation, active listening, conducting interviews, self-awareness, and understanding power dynamics. These skills will empower them to actively participate in social change in the making, preparing them for real-world challenges.
SOC 462 is the companion 3-credit course for the Chapman Impact Cohort. It offers a unique opportunity for the Cohort to engage in a multi-day (5 days) in-country field class. This program allows students to explore and support the work conducted by international partners, gaining invaluable insights into the issues, opportunities, and responses to globalization. During at-sea days, the course will meet for 18 80-minute sessions due to the learning contribution of the expanded field classes for Impact Scholars.
