PSY 437 Psychology of Gender
Overview of Course
This course explores gender from psychological, sociological, and cultural viewpoints. It examines how and why social expectations, norms, and opportunities are consistently connected to gender and the effects this has on society and individual experiences. Along with gender, the course uses an intersectionality approach to analyze how race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, age, and physical ability interact to shape experiences at personal, interpersonal, and cultural levels. The course aims to help students recognize how gender influences human experiences and relationships and understand that assumptions about gender carry social consequences. Students will learn to appreciate the complexity and variety of gendered experiences within their own cultural contexts and others. The course will be didactic, experiential, and interactive.
