Overview of Course

This course is an introduction to the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context. We will survey multiple subfields within psychology and examine ways they meaningfully inform our understanding of human behavior, thoughts, and relationships. Students will learn the basic components of major psychological theories and research findings pertaining to the brain, social behavior, development, cognition, learning, memory, personality, and relationships. Special consideration will be given to how psychological disciplines enrich our understanding of real-world interactions around the globe. Throughout our survey of topics, we will evaluate the relationship between people and their environment, investigating how contextual factors such as culture and socialization pertain to psychological perspectives. Students will be asked to critically reflect upon social observations and experiences during ports of call during the voyage.
