Fall 2026 | Epic Explorations to Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia

POLS 431 International Law

Overview of Course

International Law is not just a class; it’s a front-row seat to some of the dramas, challenges, and negotiations that shape global affairs in the 21st century. Throughout the semester, you’ll discover the history of international law, what constitutes a “state” for purposes of international law, how global treaties are crafted, how international courts decide cases, and how states navigate crises ranging from cyberattacks to mass migration to climate-driven disasters. Expect treaty-drafting exercises, and role-playing scenarios that put you in the mindset of diplomats.
Because we will be learning together at sea , our course will have a multi-week immersive unit on ocean law. The Law of the Sea is international law with waves, conflict, exploration, and discovery. We will navigate legal conflicts related to maritime boundary disputes and nations laying claim to newly emerging Arctic routes. We will read cases about piracy and explore cutting-edge controversies of deep-sea mining and marine environmental protection.
If you’re eager for a class that is intellectually adventurous, globally relevant, and offers opportunities to debate and imagine the future of world order, this course will introduce you to why international law matters today.
