TH 150 Introduction to Performance
Overview of Course
This course aims to immerse students in the foundational elements of theatrical performance, delving into the intricacies of what drives the art of theatre and guiding them in cultivating their distinctive artistic voices and refining their performance skills. The initial phase of the course will introduce students to script analysis, dramaturgy, and the age-old craft of storytelling. Through rehearsing and performing pieces from the theatrical canon, students will begin to actively engage in character creation and develop the skills necessary to embrace authenticity within the realm of imagination.
The course will integrate content, exercises, and performances with insights drawn from the voyage itinerary, fostering a profound connection between classroom activities and the diverse countries and cultures encountered. Special emphasis will be placed on exploring the rich theatrical traditions and histories of regions such as India, Africa, Asia, and the Spanish/Iberian Peninsula. Leveraging the unique travel experiences and cultural interactions offered by the program, students will be inspired to create original performance pieces reflective of their journey.
Through a combination of interviews, interactions, and observations, students will work towards uncovering and honing their individual artistic voices. The course will culminate in a final performance, showcasing the diverse works developed and rehearsed throughout the journey, providing a platform for students to present their personal artistic expressions influenced by their travel experiences.
