JTC 100 Media in Society

Overview of Course

This course is a broad introductory course that explores the role and influence of media on modern society. We will begin by contextualizing mass media through a historical framework, with a special focus on the regions we will visit on our voyage. The social, economic, political and cultural impacts of a media in a given context shall be examined in each country that we visit. Students will examine the multi-dimensional relationship between media and the various publics and counter publics and the increasing need for cultural awareness in a world where digital teams collaborate from anywhere and publish everywhere. We will discuss the difference between digital and non-digital media in the modern society today. The ongoing battle between information, misinformation, and disinformation, and the complicated nature of truth and perspective especially with the presence and influence of artificial intelligence (AI). Upon completion, students will gain increased media analysis skills, improved writing and research skills, and a sharper focus on their personal media perspective. This course will focus on 5 pillars of multimedia: Film/TV, Advertising/PR, Music, Social Media, and Journalism.
