Fall 2025: European, African, and Asian Adventure

IE 471 Children and Youth in Global Context

Overview of Course

Experiences during childhood and adolescence vary dramatically around the globe. What drives these differences? Countries and communities around the world have significantly improved the health and well-being of children and youth in the past decades. However, millions of children and youth remain under-educated, live in poverty, work in unsafe conditions, and are vulnerable to exploitation. In this course, we will explore issues affecting child health and well-being for both developed and developing countries (specifically targeting the countries that we visit) by examining culture, poverty, and programs designed to improve child outcomes. While in port, students will apply course material through field observations and real-world experiences.
