IE 272 World Interdependence – Current Global Issues [CRN 14754]
Overview of Course
Migration has been a controversial issue historically and globally. Aspects of migration are an important issue currently, debated by a variety of groups from politicians, lawyers, law enforcement officials to businessmen to name just a few. The goal of the course is for you to examine and identify the global and the national waves of migration. We will start with the history of migration on a global scale and focus on migration to the United States. Our main concern will be the treatment of the “other” by the host society. In doing so, we shall discuss 19th, 20th, and 21st century migration legislation, and differentiate the “other” by examining the keywords such as: migrant, asylum seeker, refugee etc. Finally, you will design a questionnaire, conduct an interview(s) with the international members of the community, and you will write a newspaper article based on the interview, setting it within the context of the course information and concepts. The hope is that through the examination of migration patterns and migrants the course will help humanize the phenomenon of migration.
