HIST 466 U.S.-China Relations Since 1800
Overview of Course
The relationship between China and the United States is one of the most complex and significant bilateral relationships in the world today. This course examines the historical, geopolitical, economic, and cultural dimensions of this relationship, from early interactions during the Qing Dynasty to the present. Students will explore major episodes such as the Opium trade, diplomatic missions, 20th century wars, the Mao–Nixon rapprochement, as well as ongoing issues in the post-Mao era such as trade, human rights, territorial disputes, security frictions and global governance. Through readings, discussions and other classroom exercises, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the geopolitical, economic, and cultural dimensions of this consequential relationship, preparing them to engage with the challenges and opportunities it presents in the 21st century.
